2012 Integral Fellows Nominee: Shanti Microfinance
2012 Integral Fellows Nominee: Shanti Microfinance
Sheetal started with the premise that a small microfinance loan (many just $160) could mean financial independence in communities where the poor have no assets to qualify for traditional loans or would not have access to a conventional banking system. With a grass roots effort in Gujarat, India, the organization has provided funding to: rickshaw wallahs for down-payments on their vehicles; artisans in rural and urban communities who design and develop their textiles for sale; and women farmers for eco-sanitation facilities and healthier working conditions. Sheetal’s working model has a 98% payback rate for its loans and she credits their mentoring and training programs which are designed to create independent entrepreneurs.
About Shanti Microfinance
Shanti provides an ability for a wide range of stakeholders to participate in grass roots development and philanthropy opportunities without the need to build their own corporate social responsibility strategies.
Shanti currently has a focused approach in Gujarat working with entrepreneurs who have a keen interest in leveraging microfinance and technology in order to build their businesses and sustain their communities.
